‘Devchulidanda’ emerging as a favorite destination for hikers

NAWALPARASI: Devchulidanda, located in Devchuli Municipality-6 in Nawalparasi district, is gradually becoming a popular choice for domestic tourists.

With the growing interest in trekking, the hill is emerging as a major trekking destination in the district.

Standing at about 1,936 meters above sea level, Devchulidanda offers panoramic views of the surrounding areas. Tourists visit to witness the stunning sunrise and enjoy sights of the mountains to the north, Nawalpur, Tanahun, Palpa, and Chitwan. Ward Chairman Min Bahadur Soti said that 20–30 domestic tourists now visit the hill daily.

Local visitors have praised the scenic beauty and trekking experience. Basanta Adhikari of Kawasoti said, “The mountain range to the north uplifts the mind. Expanding tourism infrastructure here could also attract foreign visitors.”

From Devchulidanda, one can observe the Narayani River to the south, settlements along the East-West Highway, and parts of Chitwan National Park.

Prabin Sapkota of Kawasoti noted that Devchulidanda is ideal for short-distance trekking. Visitors can stay at homestays in the Pokhari area, experience the local cuisine, and learn about the Magar community’s culture.

The trekking route usually starts from Daldale on the East-West Highway, about 20 kilometers north, and takes around three hours to reach the summit. Most hikers prefer the Pokhari route, which is less steep.

Along the way, hotels and homestays provide food and lodging, allowing trekkers to spend the night and enjoy local cultural programs.

Ward Chairman Soti highlighted several attractions on Devchulidanda, including natural caves, temples dedicated to three Kanyamais, and viewing towers.

According to local legend, the five Pandavas once hid here. The Tharu community also performs annual worship on Chait Purnima, holding a fair to pray for happiness and prosperity.

“The area has recently gained recognition as a significant tourist destination,” Soti said. “With the rise in trekking activities, the Pokhari, Kumsot, and Kirtipur areas have seen increased activity. The municipality and ward offices are planning to further develop tourist infrastructure and boost local income through tourism promotion.”
