Nepal to introduce electronic tracking system for tourists

KATHMANDU: The Department of Immigration has announced that foreign tourists arriving in Nepal on visit visas will now be registered and monitored through an electronic system.

Issuing a notice on Tuesday, the department said the new system will be implemented to enhance the security of foreign nationals, streamline information management, curb potential crimes, and support the promotion of Nepal’s tourism industry.

According to Director General Ram Chandra Tiwari, the system is expected to make it easier to maintain proper records of the stay and activities of foreign visitors. The department has already published the registration process and user manual on its official website.

For further details, stakeholders can contact the department’s information technology section. Letters have also been sent to monitoring committees in all 77 districts regarding the system’s enforcement.

In the first phase, starting October 17, the system will be mandatory for star-rated hotels in the Kathmandu Valley. In the second phase, beginning November 17, the requirement will expand to all star hotels, airlines, travel and tour companies, and money exchange firms.

The department has urged both public institutions and private companies providing services to foreign nationals to join the system. The Hotel Association Nepal said discussions on this system had been ongoing for years but it had not been implemented until now. The association plans to issue an official position on the rollout soon.
