RSP confirms Lekh Jung Thapa as Rupandehi-3 candidate

KATHMANDU: The Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) has confirmed Dr. Lekh Jung Thapa as its candidate for the Rupandehi-3 by-election, following scrutiny over his polygamy issue.

After news emerged about Thapa’s marital status, RSP leaders had investigated the matter and had warned that his candidacy could be revoked if he failed to provide proof of divorce from one of his wives.

On Tuesday, following discussions with party leaders, Thapa publicly shared documents on Facebook confirming his divorce from his first wife.

Following the disclosure, RSP’s Acting General Secretary Kabindra Burlakoti confirmed to Khabarhub that Thapa remains the party’s candidate and that no alternative would be considered. “We had clarified this matter in advance. He is our candidate. Big parties tried to target us unnecessarily, but we knew he was clear in all aspects,” Burlakoti said.

He added that Thapa will hold a press conference on Tuesday or Wednesday to provide full details and will engage with the Rupandehi electorate ahead of the by-election.
