Koshi Province on high alert as monsoon storm system intensifies

KATHMANDU: A weather system capable of producing thunderstorms and rainfall has developed over Koshi Province, according to the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology.

Radar monitoring from Udayapur shows the system forming over Jhapa, Morang, and Sunsari districts, spreading northwestward. As a result, most parts of the province are likely to experience moderate rainfall accompanied by thunder and lightning.

The department has warned that rainfall intensity could reach up to 25 millimeters per hour in both the Tarai and hilly regions of Koshi. One or two locations may also witness heavy downpours.

The forecast further indicates moderate rain tonight across several areas of Koshi, Bagmati, Gandaki, Lumbini, and Sudurpaschim provinces, with light to moderate rainfall expected in other provinces. Isolated heavy rainfall is also possible in Gandaki, Lumbini, and Sudurpaschim.

Authorities have urged residents to remain cautious, especially in flood- and landslide-prone areas.
