Myagdi DCC Chief Thapa arrested for embezzling Rs 1.5 billion from Cooperative

MYAGDI: Rajkumar Thapa, the Chief of the District Coordination Committee (DCC) Myagdi, has been arrested in connection with the embezzlement of over Rs 1.5 billion from a cooperative.

Thapa, along with others, is accused of misappropriating Rs 1.5 billion in savings from the Kumari Multi-Purpose Cooperative Organization, located in Beni, the headquarters of Myagdi.

Thapa, a member of the CPN-UML, became the coordinator of DCC Myagdi following the 2079 BS local elections.

A complaint was filed against Thapa and others over the cooperative fraud. The Cooperative Registrar’s Office in Gandaki conducted an investigation into the misappropriation of funds.

The investigation report from the Registrar’s Office states that the committee led by Thapa was responsible for embezzling public savings, with Thapa being identified as the primary architect of the fraud.

Thapa and his team are also accused of misusing the cooperative’s funds, including looting its treasury.

It has come to light that Thapa invested the cooperative’s savings in private schools and real estate.

The current Chairman of the cooperative, Yam Bahadur Roka, filed a petition with the Cooperative Registrar’s Office, requesting an investigation into the cooperative’s financial accounts.

In addition to his role in politics, Thapa is also a director at the Buddha Academy in Beni Bazaar.

Investigations revealed that he invested Rs 160 million from the Kumari Cooperative into the school without providing collateral.

Furthermore, Thapa and his associates allegedly used the cooperative’s funds to purchase land without collateral.
