Maoist leader Janardan Sharma voices dissent over Unified Socialist merger, warns of threat to party ideology

KATHMANDU: In Saturday’s secretariat meeting of the CPN-Maoist Centre, party leader Janardan Sharma, also known as ‘Prabhakar,’ has expressed dissent over the proposed merger with the CPN-Unified Socialist, urging the leadership to halt the process.

Sharma warned that the unification, if carried out without ideological clarity, historical review, and organizational preparation, would weaken the party’s revolutionary character and undermine the broader leftist movement. He argued that a rushed, principle-free merger could serve narrow personal interests rather than strengthen the party.

He cited the party’s history, noting that the people’s war beginning in 2052 BS led to state restructuring and the establishment of the federal democratic republic, achievements rooted in the Maoist struggle. Sharma criticized post-republic deviations, highlighting how leadership’s focus on power and positions weakened both the party’s ideology and mass base.

Pointing to the Gen-Z movement, he stressed that youth protests against corruption and leadership failures underscore the need for internal evaluation and restructuring. He described the current unification push as disregarding the upcoming party congress scheduled for Mangsir and bypassing essential discussion and debate.

Sharma called for immediate suspension of the merger process and urged the party to prioritize ideological clarity, internal reorganization, and alignment with popular aspirations, cautioning that proceeding otherwise would damage the party’s credibility.
