Democratization in UML a shared political issue: Surendra Pandey

KATHMANDU: UML Vice-Chair Surendra Pandey has said that debates on democratization within the UML are a shared issue relevant to all political parties.

Speaking at an inter-party dialogue on Democratization in the UML, Pandey said age limits and tenure provisions are technical but necessary topics, which will be discussed in the upcoming party general convention.

“Age is merely a technical matter, but discussion and decision-making are essential. Currently, UML’s majority can remove the age limit, but the majority does not always make the right decision,” Pandey said.

He added that while the age limit is not immediately enforced, it will eventually be implemented. “Sometimes agendas in the minority do not disappear. Even Madan Bhandari was occasionally in the minority. If the age limit issue is not established now, it will be applied someday,” he recalled.

Pandey said democratization is not just a UML issue but a necessity for all parties. “What if party leaders were allowed only two terms? This is not only a UML question; it concerns all political parties,” he said.

He also noted that although the proposals on age and tenure are being streamlined ahead of the general convention, the final decision will rest with the convention delegates.
