Night vehicle ban on BP Highway extended by 15 days

KAVREPALANCHOWK: The ban on night-time vehicle movement along the BP Highway has been extended by another 15 days starting today (September 1). The restriction imposed due to safety concerns will continue to apply daily from 5 PM to 5 AM.

Assistant Chief District Officer Sudarshan Shrestha said that the District Security Committee, in a meeting held on Sunday, decided to continue the ban on both passenger and private vehicles along the section from Kavrebhanjyang in Kavrepalanchok to Nepalthok on the Sindhuli border.

The decision aims to minimize disaster risks amid ongoing monsoon-related threats, particularly floods and landslides.

Authorities have urged the public to remain alert, as several sections of the highway, especially between Kavrebhanjyang and Khurkot, are considered high-risk zones. Vehicles traveling from Kathmandu to Kavrebhanjyang or toward Kathmandu will be stopped at Nepalthok on the Sindhuli side during restricted hours.

Floods and landslides in September last year severely damaged an eight-kilometer stretch from Chowkidanda (Kavrepalanchok) to Sherakhola (Sindhuli). A temporary route has since been established, allowing one-way traffic in some areas and riverbed passage in others.

Out of the highway’s total 160 km, 84 km sustained significant damage—34 km from Khurkot to Nepalthok and 50 km from Nepalthok to Dhulikhel. Permanent reconstruction has been initiated under four separate contracts.
