KATHMANDU: Minister for Home Affairs Ramesh Lekhak has emphasized the urgent need for effective action to eliminate narcotic drugs from the country.
While inspecting the office of the Narcotics Control Bureau of Nepal Police in Koteshwor, Kathmandu today, Minister Lekhak stated that the production, storage, and use of narcotic drugs have recently become a serious challenge.
“The abuse of narcotic drugs contributes to road accidents, suicides, and cybercrimes. We have launched a year-long campaign against drug abuse, and it is proving to be meaningful,” he said, urging collective support for the initiative.
He called for united efforts to combat the growing issue. “We have made notable progress in controlling narcotic drugs over the past year compared to previous years. We must move forward more effectively in the days to come. Despite limited resources, we can achieve a great deal in this area,” he added, assessing the campaign’s impact.
Acknowledging the growing threat, Minister Lekhak said the issue of narcotic drugs has become a serious national concern and pledged to continue the campaign.
Expressing concern over increasing drug addiction among youth—whom he called the nation’s future—he noted, “This mega campaign against drug abuse has produced results. Punishing drug abusers alone is not enough; awareness and prevention campaigns are equally important. This is a responsibility shared by all citizens.”
Minister Lekhak also pledged to upgrade the Narcotics Control Bureau into a full-fledged department within Nepal Police and assured full support from the Ministry of Home Affairs.
On the occasion, Inspector General of Nepal Police Deepak Thapa welcomed the Minister’s announcement and expressed appreciation for the initiative.
