Nepal elected President of UN Economic and Social Council

KATHMANDU: Nepal has been elected President of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), marking a significant milestone in the country’s engagement in global multilateral affairs. The election took place on Thursday, and Nepal has since assumed the presidency.

Following the election, Ambassador Lok Bahadur Thapa, Nepal’s Permanent Representative to the UN, described the moment as “historic” and a testament to the country’s long-standing commitment to multilateralism.

Ambassador Thapa announced that his presidency would be guided by the motto “Delivering Better,” emphasizing the need to strengthen global partnerships and reinvigorate multilateral cooperation for the effective implementation of initiatives like the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

“Delivering better is not an option — it is an imperative,” he said. “It is our pathway to restoring trust in multilateralism, bridging divides, empowering the most vulnerable, and translating commitments into action.”

Also elected as ECOSOC Vice-Presidents for the upcoming term were Amar Bendjama (Algeria), Héctor Gómez Hernández (Spain), Wellington Darío Bencosme Castaños (Dominican Republic), and Paruyr Hovhannisyan (Armenia).
