PM to virtually lay foundation stone for 64 Madhesh roads simultaneously today

KATHMANDU: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli is set to lay the foundation stone for 64 roads in Madhesh Province today.

According to the Prime Minister’s Secretariat, the foundation-laying ceremony will take place at 1 PM on Sunday from the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure Development office in Janakpurdham, the provincial capital.

The ceremony will be conducted virtually and will cover 64 provincial constituencies across eight districts of Madhesh.

Each of the 64 roads will be five kilometers long and 5.5 meters wide, informed Minister for Physical Infrastructure Development Sanjay Yadav.

The foundation stone is being laid following the approval of a multi-year procurement master plan and the completion of detailed project reports (DPRs).

The 320 kilometers of roads are expected to be built over three fiscal years. The total estimated cost of the project is Rs 12.70 billion.

Under the Provincial and Local Road Improvement Program, supported by the World Bank, the ministry also plans to construct 198 kilometers of blacktopped roads, repair 326 kilometers of major roads, and regularly maintain 1,000 kilometers of roads.

Minister Yadav stated that this marks the second phase of the “One Constituency, One Road” initiative under the Provincial Road Network Master Plan.

CPN-UML central member Kundan Kushwaha said the road projects were selected based on recommendations from elected provincial MPs and are being implemented with an all-party consensus.
