KATHMANDU: Former President Bidya Devi Bhandari has emphasized the vital role of workers in Nepal’s social, economic, and physical development.
In a message of best wishes on the occasion of Labour Day, she highlighted the need to ensure workers’ rights—including minimum wages, social security, and safe working conditions—particularly for those in the informal sector.
Posting on the social media platform X, the former President wrote, “Although Nepali migrant workers are the backbone of the national economy, they continue to face exploitation and risk. Unemployment and the ongoing brain drain of the younger generation are serious concerns, while women and domestic workers remain overlooked.”
She further called on the government, employers, and trade unions to work together to protect labor rights, enforce labor laws, and ensure dignified employment, fair wages, and comprehensive social security.
