DHULIKHEL: Prakash Singtan of Chanaute, Khanikhola Rural Municipality-6, was displaced after the floods in the Bagmati River washed away his home and farm.
Since then, he was forced to live in a temporary shelter for the past four months. Along with Prakash, seven other families have been living under tents, with continued distress after losing everything to floods that wrecked havoc late monsoon earlier last year.
After all their belongings were washed away, the Singtan family is surviving on food and clothes donated by the rural municipality and social organizations.
Since they do not have a single piece of their land elsewhere, Singtan family is forced to live under tents until the government provides them some alternative.
Sukumaya Singtan is another flood survivor who is spending her days in the tent after all her food and crops were washed away.
Since then, she has been struggling to survive and ensure food safety for her family.
The entire settlement was displaced after the floods rendered them homeless.
The Bagmati River now flows where their house used to be. The families of Prakash Singtan, Bhakta Bahadur Singtan, Buddha Bahadur, Devraj, Sajan and Bikram Singtan are taking shelter in the tents under the open sky.
They are also more worried about the next rainy season, which could inflict further damage, unless something concrete is done to prevent it.
Meanwhile, Khanikhola Rural Municipality Chair Indra Bahadur Thing said that necessary coordination is being made with the federal government to manage land for the displaced families.
“The government has provided funds to build houses, but these families do not have a single plot of land elsewhere,” said Chair Thing. We are working with the district administration and the Urban Development and Building Department to make housing plots for them in the barren land inside the local community forest.
The municipality shared that the federal government has so far provided Rs 50,000 each for the construction of temporary houses.
Thing said that 50 households within the municipality have been suffered complete damage to their houses.
