Nepali women’s football team will get prizes shortly after Tihar: PM Oli

KATHMANDU: Prime Minister (PM) KP Oli has said the Nepali women’s football team, the first runner-up in the South Asian Football Federation (SAFF) Women’s Championship 2024, will be presented with the cash prize that the government has announced as an incentive.

He said the government was supportive to promoting sports and athletes.

He said the national women’s football team winning the silver medal in the Championship concluded on Wednesday will be given the cash prize shortly after the Tihar festival.

The government has announced to award the team members with Rs 300,000 each.

Despite an outstanding performance, the Nepali team lost the final match to Bangladesh due to technical errors, the Prime Minister said, urging the players to dream of the first position in the seventh Championship and practice accordingly.

“Let’s not grieve over the loss. Tenzing Norgay scaled Mt Everest in his eighth attempt. Our efforts be for a final victory,” he said at a programme here today.

On the occasion, he said the government is searching for a suitable area to build a stadium with the capacity of accommodating 50,000 people.

The government has lately withdrawn the taxation on prize amounts. Minister for Youth and Sports, Tejulal Chaudhary, Kathmandu metropolis deputy mayor Sunita Dangol and All Nepal Football Association (ANFA) President Pankaj Bikram Nembang among others were present on the occasion.
