Upper Rahughat Hydropower Project nears completion

MYAGDI: The Upper Rahughat Hydropower Project, with a capacity of 48.5 MW, is in its final stages of construction along the Rahuganga River. The project includes a dam in Ward No. 7, Chimkhola, and a powerhouse in Ward No. 4, Daghnam, connected by a 4,900-meter tunnel currently undergoing lining.

Narottam Karki, an engineer with project promoter Tundi Power Company, stated that construction of the powerhouse, dam, tunnel, and transmission line is nearing completion, with 85% of the physical work finished. The project aims to start electricity production by June 2025.

Tundi Power is also building the Mangale Rahughat Hydropower Project with a capacity of 37.5 MW, featuring a dam in Ward No. 8, Bandi, and a powerhouse in Chimkhola. This project, with a 5,328-meter tunnel, will allow water discharge from Mangale Rahughat’s powerhouse to be collected in the Upper Rahughat dam, explained Tundi Power engineer Prakash Timilsina. Together, both projects are expected to require an investment of over NPR 13 billion.

A 200 kV, 14-kilometer transmission line is also under construction from the Ambang substation in Raghu Ganga Ward No. 3 to Chimkhola to connect the power generated by both projects to the national grid.

Additionally, two other hydropower projects are underway on the Rahughat River: Thulokhola Joint Energy Pvt. Ltd. is developing a 21.3 MW Thulokhola Project, while Thulokhola Hydropower Ltd. is constructing a 22.5 MW Upper Thulokhola Project.

On the same river, Raghu Ganga Hydropower Limited, a subsidiary of the Nepal Electricity Authority, is building the 40 MW Rahughat Hydropower Project.
