GANDAKI: Minister for Communications and Information Technology, Prithvi Subba Gurung, announced that the government is actively working to modernize and systematize the communication sector through updated legislation.
Speaking at a press conference organized by Press Chautari Nepal’s Gandaki Province chapter in Pokhara, Minister Gurung emphasized that many of Nepal’s communication laws are outdated and require revision.
He highlighted the need to update the legal framework governing state-owned media outlets such as Rastriya Samachar Samiti (RSS), Radio Nepal, Nepal Television, and Gorkhapatra, all of which currently operate under outdated laws.
The Minister informed that new legislation related to social media regulation and cybercrime is nearing completion, while bills concerning Public Service Broadcasting (PSB) and the Media Council are under discussion.
Minister Gurung also stressed the importance of Nepal having its own satellite, arguing that it would enhance the nation’s identity and self-dignity.
In line with the Digital Nepal vision, he outlined plans to achieve significant progress in good governance, prosperity, and efficient government service delivery.
Additionally, the Minister revealed plans to establish domestic printing capabilities for essential documents such as passports, driving licenses, and excise duty stickers through a security printing press within the next year.
He also expressed a commitment to providing 4G internet access nationwide and introducing 5G in major cities during the current fiscal year, 2024/25.
Minister Gurung further mentioned ongoing efforts to introduce the Federal Police Act and Federal Civil Service Act within the fiscal year to strengthen the implementation of federalism.
He assured that the current political coalition would remain intact until the next parliamentary election in 2084 BS.
On a different note, the Minister, who previously served as Chief Minister of Gandaki Province, suggested that the provincial government should be restructured.
He emphasized the importance of political leaders adhering to the culture of alliances and political values and urged the journalism sector to focus more on developmental and positive stories rather than negativity.
