JHAPA: In the past five months, six individuals have tragically lost their lives in wild elephant attacks in Jhapa.

The victims were either gathering fodder, taking morning walks, or asleep at home when the incidents occurred.

Meghraj Rai, Chief of the Division Forest Office in Jhapa, reported two additional fatalities from elephant attacks just this week.

The recent victims, Khadgamaya Mabo, 58, from Kamal Rural Municipality-5, and Pabitra Bhetuwal, 60, from Shibasatakshi-11, have left the local community deeply shaken.

Residents, like Ruma Subba from Kamal Rural Municipality-5, express constant fear following the incidents, with all 15 localities in the district vulnerable to elephant encounters.

The fatalities over the past months include one in Damak Municipality, two in Shibasatakshi, two in Haldibari, and one in Kamal Rural Municipality.

The tuskers’ terror extends to neighboring districts like Morang and Sunsari.

It’s reported that a herd of 29 wild elephants entered Nepal from India through the Bahunadangi point and remains in the area.

The Division Forest Office estimates over 60 wild elephants across Jhapa, Morang, and Sunsari districts.
