Industrialists urge govt to revive closed industries

KATHMANDU: Industrialists gathered in Gaindakot, Nawalparasi, have called on the government to restart industries that have ceased operations.

The appeal was made during a two-day national meeting of the Federation of Nepalese Industries and Businesses, which concluded with the adoption of the nine-point ‘Nawalpur Chitwan Declaration.’

Dr Tilchandra Bhattarai, the event’s coordinator, highlighted the need to reopen all closed industries, including the Bhrikuti Paper Factory in Gaindakot, through a government-private sector partnership.

He said industrialists aim to operate legally and contribute to building national capital by boosting production and productivity.

Bhattarai urged the government to address legal and regulatory obstacles that hinder industrial progress, stressing the importance of resolving these challenges smoothly.

The declaration outlined key sectors for Nepal’s economic growth, including agriculture, tourism, water resources, information technology, and minerals.

It also called for the development of religious and historical sites, such as Devghatdham, Narayani River, and Ayodhyapuri, into tourism hubs while preserving their natural and cultural purity.

In addition, industrialists urged the government to improve infrastructure, including managing the Gandaki Corridor and building a fast-track road connecting Kerung Rasuwagadhi to Madi Thori.

This route, connecting India and China, could become a significant hub for domestic and international trade.

The gathering also highlighted the need for reforms to create a more favorable business environment. Industrialists expressed concerns about contradictory laws and regulations that complicate economic activities and called for a business-friendly tax system.

Dr Yuba Raj Khatiwada, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s Chief Economic Advisor and a former finance minister, addressed the gathering.

He discussed Nepal’s economic policies and monetary reforms while answering questions from industrialists about their challenges. He assured participants that efforts would be made to amend restrictive laws and regulations.

Industrialists welcomed the recent government initiatives under the coalition of two major political parties, which they believe bring hope for addressing the country’s economic challenges.

The gathering, attended by 350 representatives nationwide, was inaugurated by CPN (UML) General Secretary Shankar Pokharel.
