Tamu Lhosar being observed today

KATHMANDU: The Gurung community is celebrating Tamu Lhosar today, bidding farewell to the past year.

In the Gurung language, ‘Lho’ means year or age, and ‘Sar’ signifies change.
The celebration includes feasts, cultural programs, and various traditional activities.

Tamu Lhosar is also said to be linked with the rays of the sun. The festival is observed on the 15th of the Nepali month of Poush, when sunrays first reach the Gurung settlements in regions such as Lamjung, Gorkha, Tanahun, Syangja, Manang, Kaski, and Parbat.

The Tamang community celebrates a similar festival during the Nepali month of Magh, while the Sherpa community celebrates it in Falgun.

The government has declared a public holiday in observance of Tamu Lhosar.
