KATHMANDU: Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) Chairman Rabi Lamichhane, who was brought to Kathmandu from Pokhara on Thursday evening for an investigation into the Swarna Laxmi Cooperative fraud, will begin giving his statement today (Friday).

Sandesh Shrestha, Chief of the District Government Attorney’s Office, Kathmandu, confirmed that preparations are underway to begin recording Lamichhane’s statement.

Lamichhane, a former Home Minister, has been in custody at the Kaski District Police Office following charges of fraud related to Pokhara’s Surya Darshan Cooperative.

He has been brought to Kathmandu for investigation into the Swarna Laxmi Cooperative fraud as well.

Earlier, former DIG Chhabilal Banjade Joshi and Kumar Ramtel were also brought to Kathmandu for statement recording in connection with the same case.

After giving their statements, they were sent back to Kaski (Pokhara).

Lamichhane’s statement will be recorded following similar procedures.

Upon his arrival in Kathmandu from Tribhuvan Airport on Thursday evening, RSP supporters rallied and shouted slogans against the government in the surrounding streets, alleging that his arrest was politically motivated.

Lamichhane is accused of embezzling funds from five cooperatives, including Surya Darshan and Swarna Laxmi, during his tenure as the Managing Director of Gorkha Media.

A case has been filed against him in Kaski for cooperative fraud, organized crime, and money laundering.
