PM Dahal urges local authorities to strive for effective governance

BIRGUNJ: Prime Minister (PM) Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ emphasized the need to elevate the prestige of local government.

During a discussion with people’s representatives from Bara and Parsa districts on Monday, he urged local authorities to focus on selecting individuals who genuinely contribute to the local government’s reputation.

Expressing apprehension about the alleged practice of appointing government officials without due process, Prime Minister Dahal stated, “There’s a growing tendency to bring in preferred juniors and make arbitrary appointments without allowing them to appear.”

He said local governments should seek employees who align with their values, support legitimate work, and contribute positively to the government’s standing.

Highlighting the pivotal role of local government as the people’s first line of governance, PM Dahal stressed the importance of direct dialogue and interaction with citizens.

He underscored, “The policies, behavior, and service delivery of local governments shape public perception of the state.”

Cautious of the impact of negative comments on public opinion, Prime Minister Dahal urged local authorities to strive for effective governance.

He cautioned that effective local government work could lead to public criticism of the federal government, sending a negative message to the entire system.

He advised, “Deliver excellent services to the people in a straightforward manner.”

Acknowledging reports of corruption and nepotism in Madhesh’s local levels, Prime Minister Dahal urged transparency and adherence to state policies and laws.

He commented, “Ensure appointments to consumer committees are based on merit and follow established procedures, preventing any perception of favoritism towards relatives or party affiliates.”
