Update: Floods, landslides claim 75 lives across Nepal

KATHMANDU: The death toll from the floods and landslides caused by relentless rain since Thursday night has risen to 75.

According to the latest reports from Nepal Police and Armed Police Force, 34 of these fatalities have occurred in the Kathmandu Valley alone.

In addition to the deceased, 34 people have lost their lives in other districts of Bagmati Province, while 21 individuals remain missing across three districts in the Kathmandu Valley. The floods have also left 15 people injured.

In Kathmandu, 11 people have died, with 10 others injured and 6 still missing.

Bhaktapur, in Kathmandu Valley, has reported 5 deaths, but the hardest-hit area is Lalitpur, where 18 people have lost their lives, with 5 injuries and 15 missing individuals.

The situation in Kavre is also dire, with 14 fatalities, 18 injuries, and 16 people unaccounted for.

Outside of the Kathmandu Valley, Sindhuli has reported one confirmed death, while Dhading has seen one death and three people missing.

In Sindupalchowk, three individuals have died, and seven have perished in Makwanpur.

Dolakha hss reported three deaths and four missing, while two individuals are unaccounted for in Rupandehi.

In Koshi Province, the death toll stands at eight, including five in Panchthar and two in Dhankuta, with three missing in Jhapa and five in Panchthar, along with one missing in Mahottari.

A closer look at individual tragedies revealed the harsh impact of the disaster.

In Kathmandu, a house collapse in Chandragiri Municipality resulted in the deaths of 70-year-old Thuni Maya Tamang and her relatives, Garba Tamang, 38, and Sabina Tamang, 36.

Thuni Maya and 12-year-old Binisa Tamang are currently receiving treatment at APF Hospital.

In Lalitpur, the community is mourning the loss of 58-year-old Sanu Chalise, who died when a landslide destroyed her home in Godavari Municipality.

Another victim, 48-year-old Sushila Limbu, succumbed to her injuries at Patan Hospital after being buried by a landslide.

In Kavre, 44-year-old Prem Bahadur Waiba died while returning home from a local market, caught in a landslide.

The tragedy continued in Banepa, where both 31-year-old Milan Tamang and his 4-year-old daughter Sunita were killed when their house collapsed due to the rains.

The situation in Dhading is equally heartbreaking, with 45-year-old Sanu Rai buried by a landslide while collecting water in his garden.

In Dhankuta, Santosh Tamang lost not only his life but also that of his wife and mother-in-law in a landslide.

As search and rescue operations continue, authorities are working diligently to locate the missing individuals.

The floods and landslides have devastated communities, prompting residents to come together in support of those affected.

Officials have urged one and all to remain vigilant and take precautions against further landslides and flooding as the situation continues to develop.

Two people were killed when the community building collapsed in Chisapani, Phidim Municipality-4, Panchthar, on Saturday morning.

The victims were 24-year-old Sapna Sherpa and her 6-year-old daughter, Dolma Sherpa, both from Phidim Municipality-12, who were asleep inside the building when it was buried by the landslide.

In a separate incident, two unidentified men lost their lives Saturday afternoon when a landslide struck the Sindhu Beach Resort in Chane, Sunkoshi Rural Municipality-4, Sindhupalchowk.

Police are searching for two other individuals who are missing as a result of this landslide.

Meanwhile, in Jugal Rural Municipality-1, Sindhupalchok, 45-year-old Chitra Bahadur Mizar and his 5-year-old guest, Avinash Nepali, died when a landslide swept away their home on Saturday afternoon.

Authorities are also looking for Chitra Bahadur’s wife, 45-year-old Thuli Kanchi Mizar, who is missing.

In Ramechhap, 51-year-old Dhan Maya Magar was killed when a shed collapsed due to a landslide in Ramechhap Municipality-6, Jamirebot, on Saturday morning as a result of the relentless rain.

Additionally, in Makwanpur, 20-year-old Phulmaya Thing, a resident of Sukkha Sallyani in Rural Municipality-3, died when her house in Bagmati Rural Municipality-2, Salleri, was destroyed by a landslide on Friday night.
