Bad weather grounds domestic flights

KATHMANDU: Domestic air travel has been impacted by continuous heavy rains, causing adverse weather conditions across Nepal. Due to the bad weather, the domestic flight, which was postponed from 7 pm on Friday, has not opened yet.

According to Jagannath Niraula, General Manager of Tribhuvan International Airport, while domestic flights remain grounded, international flights continue to operate.

This morning, Jazeera Air successfully landed at Kathmandu Airport, while Fly Dubai’s flight had to be diverted. An Air Arabia plane also landed amidst challenging weather conditions.

Poor visibility due to heavy rainfall has led to widespread cancellations of domestic flights. On Friday, 316 domestic flights were scheduled, but around 238 were canceled. The Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal suspended all domestic flights from Friday evening due to safety concerns.

International flights have also faced difficulties, with two flights being “held” and multiple delays. On Friday, a Thai Airways flight circled above Simara for nearly two hours before landing, and an Indigo Air flight was similarly delayed by an hour.

Rinji Sherpa, the spokesperson for the airport, confirmed that domestic flights remain suspended, stating, “Although Kathmandu Airport is operational, no domestic flights have taken off yet. Future decisions will depend on the weather and conditions at the destinations.”
