All 56 gates of Saptakoshi Barrage opened as water flow surges, red alert issues

SUNSARI: All 56 gates of the Saptakoshi barrage has been opened. Continuous rainfall has led to a sharp increase in the water flow of the Saptakoshi River, prompting authorities to do so.

A red alert has been issued on both sides of the barrage, signaling potential danger to nearby communities.

The surge in water flow was recorded early Saturday morning.

At 8.30 am, the water discharge in the Koshi River reached 418,285 cusecs per second, according to Chief District Officer Ram Prasad Tiwari.

Just an hour earlier, at 7 am, the flow was measured at 381,810 cusecs per second, leading authorities to open 50 of the barrage gates.

However, the rapidly rising water levels necessitated the opening of all gates soon after.

The sudden increase in water flow has alarmed residents living along the eastern and western banks of the Koshi River, with many fearing the potential for flooding and other associated risks.
