Monsoon devastation claims 208 lives across the country



KATHMANDU: Monsoon rains have caused severe flooding and landslides across various parts of the country, resulting in a tragic toll of 208 deaths.

The casualties are distributed as follows: three in the Kathmandu Valley, 29 in Koshi Province, eight in Madhes Province, 45 in Bagmati Province, 56 in Gandaki Province, 37 in Lumbini Province, 14 in Karnali Province, and 16 in Sudurpaschim Province.

In addition to the deaths, the floods have resulted in 271 injuries in Kathmandu Valley, 42 in Koshi Province, 12 in Madhes, 31 in Bagmati, 47 in Gandaki, 25 in Lumbini, 67 in Karnali, and 36 in Sudurpaschim Province, according to Police Spokesperson Deputy Inspector General of Police Dan Bahadur Karki.

Rescue operations have saved 33 people in Kathmandu Valley, 49 in Koshi Province, 12 in Bagmati, 14 in Gandaki, 4 in Lumbini, 2 in Karnali, and 111 in Sudurpaschim Province, he said.

Despite these efforts, 53 people remain missing in Koshi Province, one in Madhes, 44 in Bagmati, two in Gandaki, one in Lumbini, one in Karnali, and one in Sudurpaschim Province, according to the police.

The floods have inundated a total of 480 houses. The damage includes 364 houses, 126 sheds, 52 bridges, 6 schools, and 2 government offices.

Furthermore, 972 animals have died, and 6,049 households have been displaced by the disaster.
