Police deny abuse claims against Rabi Lamichhane

Warn against misinformation on social media

POKHARA: The District Police Office of Kaski has stated that leaders, activists, and supporters of former Home Minister Rabi Lamichhane are spreading confusion through social media.

The police expressed concerns about misleading claims surrounding Lamichhane, the Chairman of the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), who was detained for investigation and taken to court during an extension of his detention period.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Basanta Sharma, the Spokesperson for the District Police Office, issued a statement on Sunday highlighting the serious attention these fabricated narratives have drawn.

He noted that platforms like TikTok are being used to circulate misinformation.

“Such baseless and misleading news can misinform the public and negatively impact the factual investigation of the case. We urge everyone to share information grounded in fact,” Sharma stated.

The police further requested that only accurate and verifiable information be disseminated, rather than rumors or speculative statements.

“The District Police Office of Kaski is committed to conducting evidence-based investigations in accordance with Nepal’s Constitution and existing laws. We ask that the public refrain from sharing unverified claims and instead focus on factual information,” Sharma emphasized.

The Kaski District Court last week granted the police an additional seven days to investigate Lamichhane, who was arrested in connection with a cooperative fraud case.

During this time, Lamichhane’s defense lawyers made serious allegations on social media, claiming the police had prevented them from meeting him.

They asserted that there were attempts to misrepresent his treatment in custody and in court.
