HoR Session: Lawmakers demand expedited mitigation and rescue efforts for monsoon hazards

KATHMANDU: In a meeting of the House of Representatives (HoR) today, lawmakers called on the government to expedite mitigation, relief, and rescue efforts in response to the ongoing monsoon hazards.

They voiced concerns over the lives affected by landslides, floods, lightning, and inundation across the country.

Ishwari Devi Neupane demanded that the government ensure timely relief and rescue operations for those affected, and accelerate efforts to mitigate potential incidents.

Manbir Rai and Amanlal Modi were among the lawmakers who echoed these concerns.

Amresh Kumar Singh highlighted the grave threat posed by snapped electric cables in public areas, urging the relevant authorities to manage this hazard.

Lawmaker Ram Hari Khatiwada informed the House that landslides and floods have caused significant loss of lives and property in various locations in Okhaldhunga.

He mentioned that the injured were airlifted to Kathmandu for treatment and called attention to the disruption of essential services, including drinking water, electricity, internet, and irrigation.

Similarly, HoR member Man Bahadur Gurung demanded relief, compensation, and easy access to healthcare for victims in Kaski, where landslides and floods have caused considerable damage.

Lawmaker Urmila Majhi informed the House that six people lost their lives due to monsoon-related disasters in Lamjung.

Lawmaker Kiran Sah urged the government and relevant bodies to focus on disaster management, emphasizing risk reduction and preparedness.

Abdul Khan reported that 20 people were killed, and more than 16 were injured across the country due to rainfall on Tuesday and Wednesday.

He also demanded a detailed investigation into the rising anomalies in the education sector.
