Nine youths allegedly joining Russian army out of family contact for months

TANAHU: Nine young individuals, reportedly enlisted in the Russian military, have lost contact with their families, causing distress among their loved ones.

According to relatives, these youths chose to join the Russian military due to a perceived lack of better career opportunities at home.

A mother in Byas municipality shared her anguish over her son, who has been out of touch with the family for the past four months.

Initially, her son reassured her not to worry, but despite her efforts to remain calm, she finds herself restless.

“I spend sleepless nights worrying about my son,” said the woman, who preferred to remain unnamed.

These families have sought assistance from the Migrant Resource Centre under the Safer Migration Programme (SaMI) to ensure the safe return of their loved ones.

According to Goma Tiwari, a consultant at the Centre, three of the reported individuals who joined the Russian security force are from Byas municipality, one from Devghat Rural Municipality, three from Bhanu municipality, one from Shuklagandaki, and one from Myagde Rural Municipality.

The Centre has forwarded official documents to the Department of Consular Services, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, requesting assistance in locating them.

It is reported that these youths paid middlepersons Rs 500,000 to 600,000 each to obtain a visit visa for Russia and join the military force.

Luna Rana, the Centre’s district coordinator, expressed concern that there may be more individuals from Tanahu enlisting in the Russian force, despite it being prohibited by the government.

She highlighted the need for increased awareness to discourage such actions.

The District Administration Office, Tanahu, stated that individuals visiting the office for passport services are briefed on countries banned by the State and the associated risks and consequences of unlawful travel.

Efforts are underway to facilitate the safe return of Nepalis from Russia through diplomatic channels. Authorities continue to advise against any plans to visit countries banned by the State.
