Nepali Congress to finalize candidates for by-election on April 2

KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress, the primary opposition party, is gearing up to conclude the selection process for its candidates in the upcoming by-elections, slated for April 2.

Dr. Prakash Sharan Mahat, spokesperson for the Nepali Congress, revealed that the party will determine its candidates for the by-elections in Ilam-2 and Bhajang-1 on April 20.

The party has put forward seven individuals for consideration as candidates for the by-election in Illam-2.

The list comprises five male and two female names, as disclosed by Uddav Thapa, President of the party for Koshi Province. Notable aspirants include Dambar Bahadur Khadka, Besh Raj Acharya, Keshav Thapa, Nagendra Kumal, Ramesh Lingden, Chandra Maya Limbu, and Shani Kal Tamang.

The selection process will involve meetings of the parliamentary party and the central work execution committee, according to Mahat.

President Sher Bahadur Deuba is reportedly inclined towards endorsing Dambar Khadka as the party’s candidate in Ilam-2, considering his previous electoral performance.

In parallel, the CPN (Maoist Center) has also initiated the process of selecting its candidate for the upcoming by-election in Illam-2.

Four names have been recommended by the Provincial Committee, including Direndra Sharma Timalsina, Urmila Tamang, Om Bahadur Gurung, and Kumar Baraili, under the leadership of Harka Bahadur Nembang, Chairman of the party for Koshi Province.

The CPN-UML has picked Suhang Nembang, son of late party leader Subhash Nembang as party’s candidate for by-election to be held in Ilam-2 while the Rastriya Swatantra Party and CPN (Unified Socialist) are yet to select their candidates for the election.
