Petrol imports surge while diesel imports decline at Birgunj border

KATHMANDU: Diesel imports from the Birgunj border have declined, while petrol imports have seen a notable increase during the first five months of the current fiscal year.

The Birgunj Customs Office reported a 1.13 percent decrease in diesel imports and a corresponding revenue decline of 6.91 percent compared to the same period last fiscal year.

In the first five months of the fiscal, Nepal imported 366,719 kiloliters of diesel worth Rs 32.35 billion. In the same period last fiscal year, the import stood at 370,920 kiloliters, valued at Rs 40.36 billion.

In contrast, petrol imports have surged by 16.23 percent during the same period. Nepal imported 188,345 kiloliters of petrol worth Rs 16.21 billion in the current fiscal year, compared to 162,046 kiloliters worth Rs 16.39 billion in the previous fiscal year.

Revenue from petrol imports increased by 12.52 percent.

Diesel is primarily imported via the Motihari-Amlekhgunj petroleum pipeline, while petrol is brought in using tankers.

The Nepal Oil Corporation (NOC) has revealed plans to begin importing petrol and kerosene through the pipeline within this month, which is expected to enhance efficiency and reduce logistical challenges.
