BP Memorial Cancer Hospital prepares to launch bone marrow transplant service

CHITWAN: The BP Koirala Memorial Hospital in Chitwan is gearing up to establish a bone marrow transplant service, with infrastructure development already underway.

This new service is being supported by the Government of the People’s Republic of China.

Dr. Shivaji Poudel, Executive Director of the hospital, stated that China has committed to providing both financial and technical assistance for the project.

This support will encompass everything from building construction and equipment procurement to workforce training.

The construction of the building for the new service is expected to commence at the end of 2024.

An agreement for the project was signed on April 25 by Dr. Roshan Pokhrel, Secretary at the Ministry of Health and Population, and Luo Zhaohui, Chairman of the China International Development Cooperation Agency.

A Chinese team has already inspected the site selected for the project. Dr. Poudel anticipates that the construction will be completed within one year of its start.

While bone marrow transplant facilities are sporadically available in Kathmandu, this initiative marks the first time in Nepal that preparations are underway to offer this service in a dedicated facility.

The hospital plans to establish a five-bed unit for the bone marrow transplant service.
