KATHMANDU: Shri Krishna Janmastami, the birthday of Lord Krishna, is being celebrated by Hindus throughout the country today with devotion and veneration amidst a variety of programs.
According to scriptures, Lord Shri Krishna was born at midnight on Bhadrakrishna Astami according to the lunar calendar during the Dwapar era.
Lord Krishna is considered the incarnation of Lord Vishnu, the protector of humanity from evil, injustice, and malevolent forces.
He is also revered as the proponent of the three principles of Gyanayog, Karmayog, and Bhaktiyog.
Shri Krishna Janmastami is celebrated grandly to honor the virtuous deeds of Lord Krishna, promoting a happy and prosperous life. Born to Vasudev and Devaki and held prisoner by Kamsa in Mathura, Lord Krishna guided humanity on the path of knowledge, truth, and immortality, according to legend.
Lord Krishna is also known as “Gopal” for his dedicated service as a cowherd and “Manmohan” for the enchanting melodies he played on his flute.
Devotees flock to temples dedicated to Lord Krishna, including the renowned Shri Krishna Temple in Mangal Bazaar, Lalitpur.
This historic temple, constructed from stone, was built by King Siddhi Narsingh Malla of Patan.
Various religious organizations and institutions celebrate Lord Krishna’s birth anniversary by organizing colorful processions featuring idols of Lord Krishna and decorative portraits.
Devotees, particularly women, spend the night chanting prayers and devotional songs, dancing, and lighting oil lamps.
