Minister Sharma emphasizes digital transformation for national progress



KATHMANDU: Minister for Communications and Information Technology, Rekha Sharma, has underscored the imperative of embracing digital innovation for the advancement of the nation.

Addressing the ‘digital expo’ organized by the Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Kathmandu, Minister Sharma emphasized that there is no alternative to a digital departure for ensuring the progressive transformation of the country.

She highlighted the government’s commitment to expanding internet coverage nationwide to facilitate this transition.

Sharma outlined agriculture, energy, tourism, and information technology as the government’s primary focus areas, announcing plans to showcase three IT-related projects at an upcoming investment summit.

She urged private sector investment in these sectors to drive growth and development.

The Minister also noted the rising trend of online trade facilitated by advancements in IT, stressing the need for effective management of digital commerce.

She assured that the government is actively considering strategies to regulate digital trade.

Furthermore, the government spokesperson reiterated the commitment to addressing challenges faced by the private sector, pledging efforts to streamline procedures and remove legal hurdles to foster an investment-friendly environment.

In response, Kamalesh Agrawal, Chair of the Nepal Chamber of Commerce, called for improved coordination between the government and the private sector to enhance economic prosperity.

He specifically urged the government to facilitate interstate online payments.

Hemraj Dhakal, Vice Chair of FNCCI, echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing the need for the government to play an effective role in creating an investment-friendly atmosphere.

He emphasized the importance of structural changes in the present economy.

Likewise, Umesh Singh, Chair of the Federation of Nepal Cottage and Small Industries, urged the government to engage with the private sector to boost the national economy, highlighting the significance of mutual trust and cooperation for sustainable growth.
