Lawmakers advocate for swift post-earthquake reconstruction

KATHMANDU: Members of the National Assembly (NA) are urging the prompt acceleration of post-earthquake reconstruction efforts in the districts affected by the recent seismic activity.

Following a severe earthquake with a magnitude of 6.4 that struck Jajarkot and its neighboring districts on November 3 last year, causing numerous casualties and fatalities and significant damage to physical properties, parliamentarians are emphasizing the urgent need for reconstruction.

In today’s NA meeting, Maya Prasad Sharma, a parliamentarian from CPN-Maoist Center, called for expediting the reconstruction process in the quake-affected districts of Jajarkot, Dailekh, Salyan, Doti, and Bajhang.

Sharma highlighted the damage in the communication sector caused by the quake and stressed the importance of a technical study on the geography of the affected areas.

He argued, “The geography of the affected areas has been eroded, and fissures have developed in the land. Therefore, it is necessary to study whether those places are suitable for habitation or not.”

Dil Kumari Rawal Thapa from CPN-UML emphasized the development of road infrastructure, healthcare, education, and other sectors to transform Chitwan into a prominent tourist destination.

She suggested protecting and promoting religious sites such as Damodar Kunda (origin of the Narayani river), Muktinah Gosaikunda, Trishuli to Golaghat, and Trivenidham for religious tourism.

Rameshjung Rayamajhi of Nepali Congress urged parliamentarians to fulfill the commitments and promises made to the people during the elections.

He called for addressing the issues of usury victims, expediting the formulation of federal laws, and ensuring that the upcoming budget prioritizes public welfare over political interests.

Singha Bahadur Bishwakarma highlighted the need for formulating laws to implement the rights enshrined in the Constitution for Dalit communities.

Other parliamentarians raising concerns related to good governance included Narayan Prasad Dahal, Indu Kadariya, Shekhar Kumar Singh, Narpati Luhar, and Deepa Gurung, among others.
