Students fall ill due to cold weather in Baglung

BAGLUNG: Students in Dhorpatan, Baglung, are falling ill as cold weather intensifies.

Those at Jyoti Bikash Secondary School in Chisapani, Dhorpatan Municipality-9, and Siddhabarah Primary School in Chentung have been particularly affected, leading to disruptions in teaching.

Chak Bahadur Adai, principal of Jyoti Bikas Secondary School, noted that the high hilly region experiences frost in the mornings and cold winds in the afternoons, contributing to illnesses among children.

Many students are suffering from fever, cough, and pneumonia, which has impacted classroom instruction. Typically, schools in Dhorpatan close for the winter season.

Adai mentioned that despite plans to continue classes throughout the month of Poush, the school was forced to close early due to the severe cold.

He emphasized the lack of heating solutions for grades 9 and 10 during morning tuition sessions, which hinders students’ ability to study effectively.

“The playground is covered in frost in the mornings, and we begin classes at 10 a.m. when the sun rises, finishing at 3:30 p.m.,” he explained.

Many families in Dhorpatan send their children to study in Pokhara, Kathmandu, and other locations due to the harsh conditions.

Schools operating in the Dhorpatan Valley include Jyoti Bikash Secondary School, Siddhabarah Primary School, Sahalthan Primary School, Bal Jyoti Primary School, Dhorpatan Durgam Primary School, and Dhorbahara Primary School.

These institutions close every year starting in the second week of Poush due to the cold weather.
