KATHMANDU: Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Bishnu Prasad Paudel has said that transport infrastructure is essential for  economic growth and improving the living standards of citizens during his address at the Global Sustainable Transport Forum in Beijing, China.

Speaking at the event, Finance Minister Paudel reaffirmed Nepal’s commitment to developing a sustainable and reliable transport system.

He highlighted the necessity of expanding domestic and foreign investment to build sustainable transport infrastructure, including road networks, railways, air transport, and modern systems like podways, in line with Nepal’s geographical needs.

Paudel pointed out that improved transport infrastructure would not only enhance the mobility and quality of life for ordinary citizens but also boost Nepal’s international trade by making it more competitive.

Moreover, it would allow domestic products better access to both local and international markets.

He further expressed optimism that the development of systematic urbanization and transport systems would significantly contribute to Nepal’s goal of achieving sustainable development by 2030.

In his address, Finance Minister Paudel also underlined Nepal’s policy of promoting the use of electric vehicles to ensure environmentally friendly and sustainable transport.

He shared that Nepal is providing revenue concessions on electric vehicle imports and advancing the development of necessary infrastructure. Additionally, the government is looking to attract international technology and investment to produce electric vehicles domestically.

The Global Sustainable Transport Forum, which commenced today, sees the participation of high-level political delegations from several countries, including Nepal.

Representing Nepal alongside Finance Minister Paudel are Acting Ambassador to China Surendra Yadav, Joint Secretary and Spokesperson of the Ministry of Finance Mahesh Bhattarai, and other senior officials.
