Former Minister Aftab Alam gets life imprisonment for Rajapur bomb incident

KATHMANDU: Former Minister Mohammad Aftab Alam has been sentenced to life imprisonment in connection with the Rajapur bomb incident.

The District Court of Rautahat issued the order for Alam’s life imprisonment, following a conviction in the murder case.

Presiding over the case, a bench led by Justice Matrika Prasad Acharya of the District Court found Alam guilty of the charges.

The District Attorney’s Office in Rautahat filed the case against Alam on November 4, seeking life imprisonment on three counts of crime.

Alam was accused of involvement in the production of explosives and offenses related to murder, allegations which he has consistently denied.

Despite pleading not guilty and asserting that no explosion occurred, Alam was convicted by the court.

Eleven individuals were charged in connection with the crime, with ten, including Alam, accused of burning those injured in a bomb explosion at a brick kiln.

Additionally, one person was charged with aiding the crime.

The incident occurred on April 9, 2008, when Alam’s associates were allegedly constructing a bomb under his instructions.

The explosion occurred accidentally, resulting in injuries to Alam’s associates and the deaths of seven individuals.
