KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress (NC) lawmaker Ramhari Khatiwada has thrown a satirical punch at the Ministry of Tourism, alleging that the procurement process for new aircraft has kick-started a game of commission.

Addressing the House of Representatives on Sunday, Khatiwada criticized the Tourism Minister Sudan Kirati for what he deemed as prioritizing publicity over substantial efforts.

Accusing the Minister of Tourism of steering Nepal Airlines towards new aircraft purchases solely for commission gains, Khatiwada highlighted concerns about the national carrier’s diminishing strength.

He contended that the minister was eyeing outdated technology aircraft, no longer in production globally, and initiated the procurement process even before the completion of the study committee’s evaluation.

MP Khatiwada asserted that Nepal Airlines was struggling to meet financial obligations, particularly failing to pay interest on previously acquired wide-body and narrow-body aircraft.

He criticized Minister Kirati, accusing him of focusing on public relations rather than implementing tangible improvements.

In a mocking tone, Khatiwada remarked, “The minister enters the office armed with a camera and a broom, seemingly aspiring to be a revolutionary minister cleaning up corruption. However, essential reforms remain elusive.”

He further alleged that Minister Kirati appointed a controversial figure in Lumbini’s historic area, insinuating a connection to the ongoing commission game.

Khatiwada’s critique extended to the hiring practices at airports, where he condemned the employment of wage and contract workers in the presence of thousands of permanent employees.

Expressing disappointment, he underscored the citizens’ disillusionment when a government minister is allegedly involved in manipulating substantial amounts.
