Egg prices increased as demand surges following Bhadra

CHITWAN: The demand for eggs has surged with the start of the lunar month of Bhadra, leading to a price hike by poultry farms.

Traditionally, during the holy month of Shrawan, many Hindus observe fasting and adopt a vegetarian diet, resulting in decreased egg consumption.

However, with the onset of Bhadra, the demand for eggs has rebounded.

Binod Pokharel, Executive Director of Daunne Agro Farm Limited, confirmed that poultry farms have raised egg prices in response to the increased demand.

This pricing adjustment comes after the Department of Commercial Supply and Consumer Protection instructed that only producers should set the prices.

As a result, the market price for eggs has risen starting today.

Daunne Agro, based in Chitwan, has set the price at Rs 500 per crate (30 eggs).

The price for large eggs is Rs 495 per crate, while medium-sized eggs are priced at Rs 425 per crate.

Similarly, Himchuli Poultry Farm has also increased its prices.

According to the farm’s Chair, Rajendra Lamichhane, the price of “excel” eggs has gone up by Rs 5 per crate, and the price of large and medium eggs has increased by Rs 10 per crate.

Egg producers have been marketing their products through the Nepal Layers Poultry Association.

Pokharel, who also serves as the association’s president, noted that 75 percent of poultry farmers have been displaced due to continuous financial losses.

Poultry trader Trilochan Kandel, former president of the Chitwan Industry Association, added that while demand for eggs has increased, production has declined.

Approximately two months ago, 2.5 to 2.6 million eggs were being produced daily, but that number has since dropped to 2.3 to 2.4 million eggs per day.
