Special polio vaccination campaign starts in Kathmandu Valley

KATHMANDU: The government is launching a special vaccination drive against polio today in Kathmandu, Lalitpur, and Bhaktapur districts, spanning three days.

Following the discovery of a modified poliovirus (Vaccine Derived Polio Virus Type 3) in Kathmandu’s water sources, the Ministry of Health and Population has initiated a targeted vaccination effort from Wednesday to Friday this week.

Dr. Bivek Kumar Lal, Director of Family Welfare Division, confirmed that children aged from birth to five years across the three districts will receive the polio vaccine during this period.

Despite regular vaccination efforts, the government has urged parents to ensure their children participate in this special campaign.

Nepal was declared polio-free by the World Health Organization a decade ago.
