IN PICS: Kathmandu embraces the vibrant hues of Holi celebration

KATHMANDU: Fagu Poornima or Holi, the exuberant festival of colors, paints Kathmandu and its hilly surroundings with joyous festivities today and tomorrow, extending to the Terai region.

This auspicious festival, also known as the Spring festival, heralds the arrival of spring and the bountiful harvest season.

Its commencement, marked by Chhoti Holi or Holika Dahan, symbolizes the victory of good over evil as effigies are set ablaze amidst special prayers to dispel malevolent forces.

The subsequent day, known as Dhuleti or Holi, sees revelers delighting in the playful smearing of vibrant colors, including the traditional Abir or red vermilion powder.

This joyous occasion, steeped in cultural significance, holds a cherished place among the diverse festivals celebrated in Nepal.

From the young to the elderly, individuals of all ages partake in the festivities with infectious enthusiasm, creating an atmosphere of camaraderie and jubilation.

As one of the country’s most anticipated festivals, Fagu Poornima unfolds its festivities on the eighth day of the new moon, culminating with the ceremonial burning of the ‘Chir’ on the full moon day.

Captured through the lens, here are glimpses of the spirited Holi celebrations in the heart of Kathmandu on Sunday, showcasing the city immersed in the kaleidoscope of colors and the spirit of unity and merriment.
