Investigation committee submits 90-page report on Siraha jail mismanagement

KATHMANDU: The investigation committee formed to look into the Siraha jail incident has submitted its report after nearly a month and a half of research.

The committee submitted the report to the District Administration Office on Thursday, according to Ravi Kumar Mahat, a member of the committee and the Information Officer at the District Administration Office, Siraha.

According to Mahat, the report is 90 pages long.

“Chief District Officer Vasudev Dahal is on leave. He is expected to return to the office on Thursday. After his arrival, the report will be presented at the District Security Committee meeting and will be made public,” said Mahat.

The investigation began after information surfaced in October about inmates consuming alcohol and engaging in the illegal trade of narcotics within the prison.

Following this, a five-member investigation committee led by DSP Bishnu Prasad Soti was formed on November 10. The committee included representatives from the District Administration and the prison office.

The media had reported incidents of prison officers and inmates consuming alcohol and using mobile phones, along with evidence of illegal drugs being sold at five times the market price within the prison.

Following these revelations, the Prison Management Department directed the District Administration Office in Siraha to investigate the incident and take action against those involved.

The committee was initially given 15 days to complete its investigation report. However, as the investigation took longer than expected, the District Security Committee extended the deadline.

The investigation involved reviewing the prison’s physical infrastructure, security systems, administrative procedures, and conducting interviews with inmates, among other activities.
