Board recommends parole for 285 prisoners

KATHMANDU: The Federal Probation and Parole Board has recommended granting parole to 285 prisoners.

The meeting, chaired by Attorney General Ramesh Badal, based its recommendation on a proposal submitted by the Department of Prison Management.

This initiative aims to allow prisoners with good conduct to be released on parole in accordance with Section 38 of the Criminal Offenses (Determination and Execution of Punishment) Act, 2074 BS.

According to Suryaraj Dahal, Joint Attorney at the Office of the Attorney General, a convict sentenced to more than one year in prison who has served at least two-thirds of their sentence and demonstrates good conduct is eligible for parole.

However, the Act prohibits parole for individuals convicted of life imprisonment, corruption, extortion, human trafficking, smuggling, organized crime, money laundering, torture, cruel or inhuman treatment, crimes against humanity, and crimes against the state.
