KATHMANDU: Minister for Health and Population Pradeep Poudel has formed a committee to conduct a feasibility study to establish a neuro-treatment centre.

Dr. Gopal Sedhai, an associate professor at the Institute of Medical Studies, Tribhuvan University, will serve as the coordinator of the committee.

Other members include Dr. Binod Rajbhandari from Bir Hospital, Dr. Rajiv Ojha from the Institute of Medical Studies, TU, and representatives from the Nepalese Association of Neurologists.

Dr. Amit Kandel, an associate professor at the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences in the United States, and Dr. Pushpa Raj Poudel, section chief of the Policy Planning and Monitoring Division of the Ministry, will act as member secretaries.

The committee is tasked with conducting a feasibility study to identify suitable land for the establishment of a national neurosurgery center in the country.

It has been instructed to submit its recommendations to the ministry for approval after engaging in extensive discussions with experts.

Spokesperson for the Ministry, Dr. Prakash Budhathoki, emphasized the need for the center, citing the increasing burden of neuro-related diseases.

“The study committee was formed through a ministerial-level decision because it is crucial to establish the center to address this situation and ensure that underprivileged individuals have access to subsidized facilities,” he stated.

Currently, neuro-related treatments are only available through the non-governmental sector, according to the Ministry.
