UN High Commissioner for Human Rights calls on PM Oli

NEW YORK: United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, paid a courtesy call on Prime Minister KP Oli at the Office of the Permanent Representative of Nepal to the UN in New York.

PM Oli is currently in the U.S. for the 79th United Nations General Assembly, where he is leading the Nepali delegation.

During the meeting, Türk expressed his satisfaction with the endorsement of legislation related to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and the Commission of Investigation on Disappeared Persons—two crucial laws for finalizing Nepal’s peace process.

According to Bishnu Prasad Rimal, Principal Advisor to PM Oli, Türk suggested that Nepal’s approach to achieving political consensus could serve as a model for the world.

Türk also emphasized the importance of climate justice for Nepal, noting that the melting of snow in the Himalayas due to global warming has global implications.

Prime Minister Oli underscored the need to prioritize climate justice as a strategic issue for safeguarding humanity.

Also present at the meeting were Principal Advisor Rimal, Foreign Secretary Sewa Lamsal, and Nepal’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Lok Bahadur Thapa.
