KATHMANDU: Youths who had been staging a fast-unto-death for the past four days, demanding the construction of a new bridge linking Dhanusha and Siraha districts over the Kamala River along the Hulaki Highway, have ended their protest.
The fast was broken after Chief Minister of Madhes Province, Satish Kumar Singh, held talks with the protesters and signed a four-point agreement.
Chief Minister Singh offered juice to the protesting youths, signaling the end of their fast.
The agreement was signed by Pravin Kumar Yadav, Coordinator of the Struggle Committee for the Construction of a New Kamala Bridge on Hulaki Road, and Chief Minister Singh.
According to the agreement, the Madhes Province Government will fund the entire construction of the new bridge if the federal government does not allocate the necessary budget in its fiscal year 2025/26.
A tender for preparing the detailed project report of the bridge will be called by November 16, 2024.
As part of the agreement, all protest activities by the Struggle Committee in Siraha and Dhanusha will be halted immediately.
The fast-unto-death, which began on August 20, involved ten youths, including Acting Chair of Siraha Library Bhogendra Yadav, Siraha Municipality-6 Chairman Indrajeet Yadav, Municipality-4 Chairman Mohammad Shamshad Alam, Aurahi Rural Municipality-4 Chair Surendra Kumar Yadav, local youth Manish Kumar Yadav, Engineer Shailendra Yadav, Siraha Municipality-8 member Er Rupesh Yadav, Engineer Shiva Shankar Yadav, and Aurahi Rural Municipality-3 Chair Jeevachha Yadav.
They had been protesting in front of the Office of the Chief Minister and Council of Ministers, urging the Province Government to take responsibility for the project under the federal system.
