TU Vice-Chancellor Dr Baral advocates reverting bachelor’s degree to three years

KATHMANDU: Prof. Dr. Keshar Jung Baral, the newly appointed Vice-Chancellor of Tribhuvan University (TU), has announced plans to revise the Bachelor’s level program back to a duration of three years.

The four-year Bachelor’s degree program was introduced by Tribhuvan University (TU) at the Department of Management starting from the academic year 2071/72 BS.

However, VC Baral highlighted concerns regarding the additional financial burden on students and guardians, as well as operational challenges faced by TU due to the extended duration.

While acknowledging that the four-year program was aligned with some foreign education systems, he noted that many countries, including neighboring India and several European nations, still adhere to the traditional three-year Bachelor’s degree format.

VC Baral proposed the possibility of offering an additional one-year honorary program for students completing the three-year Bachelor’s degree and wishing to pursue further studies abroad in four-year degree programs.

However, he also acknowledged that certain subjects might require a four-year duration due to specialization.

Furthermore, VC Baral addressed enrollment challenges in certain educational programs, particularly within the Faculty of Humanities.

He suggested restructuring the Humanities department into a multi-disciplinary liberal arts program to facilitate enrollment from other faculties and resolve the issue.

Similarly, he proposed restructuring education faculty programs to allow students from various subjects to enroll.

Outgoing acting VC Shivalal Bhusal and other senior officials warmly welcomed the newly appointed VC Baral to his position.
