Current FY sees Rs 94.52 billion surge in public debt

KATHMANDU: Country’s public debt has been added by Rs 94.52 billion in the first two months of the current fiscal year.

According to the Public Debt Management Office, the country’s sovereign debt which was Rs 2434.9 billion till the end of the last fiscal year has now reached Rs 2528.62 billion.

The country’s sovereign debt is equal to 44.32 percent of the gross domestic product (GDP).

Likewise, the country’s internal debt has reached Rs 1235.9 billion so far from Rs 1180.9 billion in the last fiscal year.

The internal debt of Nepal is 21.66 percent in terms of the GDP ratio.

In the first two months of the current fiscal year, the government collected Rs 90 billion as internal debt while it repaid Rs 35 billion.

The external loan to be repaid by the government in the first two months of the current fiscal year has reached Rs 1292.71 billion while such amount was Rs 1253.19 billion till the end of the last fiscal year.

In terms of GDP, the external loan of the country is 22.66 percent.

Under Secretary at the Public Debt Management Office, Prakash Pudasaini said that the government has already raised Rs 104.5 billion in public debt against the annual target of Rs 547 billion in the current fiscal year.
