KATHMANDU: In a concerted effort to address climate change and its impacts, Nepal is hosting the International Expert Dialogue on Mountains, People, and Climate Change starting today.

The event will be inaugurated by Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal.

Over the next two days, experts from 25 countries will convene, joined by more than 200 representatives from Nepal, island nations, international communities, development partners, international non-governmental organizations, the private sector, and civil societies.

This dialogue aims to enhance coordination and prioritize actions for mountain regions in the face of climate change. It seeks to foster collaboration among mountain countries and agencies on UNFCCC mountain work programs and mandates, according to Nepal’s Ministry of Forests and Environment.

The key objectives of the event include:

  • Developing a Shared Platform: Establish the “Group of Mountain Partnership” to raise awareness about the vulnerability of mountains to climate change, promote collaboration for a unified understanding and position among mountainous countries, and ensure mountain communities are recognized in international and regional processes.
  • Knowledge Exchange and Innovation: Facilitate the exchange of knowledge, research, and innovative solutions for adapting to climate change. Focus on minimizing loss and damage to mountain communities and their livelihoods, and optimizing the transition to clean energy.
  • Promoting Multilateralism and Partnerships: Encourage multilateral cooperation, technology transfer, capacity development, and climate finance dedicated to mountainous nations and their populations.

This event represents a significant step towards building a collaborative approach to addressing the unique challenges faced by mountainous regions in the context of global climate change.
