KATHMANDU: Chief Justice Bishwombhar Prasad Shrestha emphasized the significance of women’s presence in the judiciary, stating that it promotes equal justice.
Speaking at the inaugural session of the first national conference of women judges, CJ Shrestha highlighted the far-reaching impact of increased participation of women judges in the judiciary.
Acknowledging the growing presence of women in the legal sector, CJ Shrestha noted the rising number of women students pursuing law education.
He reaffirmed the constitutional provision for proportional participation and expressed confidence in the gradual increase of women justices.
CJ Shrestha underscored his commitment to judicial reforms since assuming leadership at the apex court, promising to continue initiatives in this regard.
Minister for Law, Justice, and Parliamentary Affairs, Padam Giri, echoed CJ Shrestha’s sentiments, pledging to expedite the law-making process to enhance women’s representation in the judiciary.
Former Chief Justice Sushila Karki expressed satisfaction at organizing the women judge conference, emphasizing women’s capacity to deliver justice despite fulfilling multiple responsibilities.
SC Justice and Justice Society Nepal Chair Sapana Malla highlighted the conference’s significance in organizing and expanding the network of women judges, focusing on professional competence and gender justice.
The conference, organized by the National Judicial Academy Nepal and Justice Society of Nepal under the theme ‘Advancing Gender Equality in the Judicial System: Our Commitment,’ aims to address challenges faced by women judges, enhance their professional competence, and promote gender equality in the judicial system.
With 43 women judges and eight retired women judges participating, the conference will include workshops on unity and network building, leadership development, and empowerment of women in the judiciary.
